Flute:
The reason I'm taking flute lesson is because I want to learn one new instrument that I had never imagined to play before. I learn with one of the best flutist in SBTS, Sylvia Kim (Korean). Within 3 months I have learned quite many stuff. My trainer is quite satisfied with my improvement, she said, my breathing is good since I am also a singer, and my lips are very flexible, which an advantage for flutist.
So far I have learned to play middle C (C4) to high C (C6) and just started to learn high D and E (mostly all the 'white keys' on the piano, except Bb and F#).
I still have difficulty when playing over different registers(mostly low to high) - while my low register sounds better (except for low D and C).
In the early stage of playing flute, my fingers hurt a lot after playing / rehearsing, the pain is gone now, but I can feel a tiny 'bump' on my ring finger (jari manis).
I am really excited, hopefuly I am able to learn so far until I am able to play a solo piece.
Piano:
The objective of taking piano lesson are: to improve my sight reading, my technique, and my accompanying ability (for church songs/ hymns). Based on those objectives, my trainer has given me some assignments to do:
sight reading two different hymns every day,
playing some simple contemporary songs for piano,
playing the improvisation based on a leadsheet (chords).
The first one is worked quite well, I can feel that my sight-reading is getting better and better. Unfortunately the other two assignments are not really helpful. The piano pieces that I play are somewhat too easy and not much challenging. And also playing from leadsheet does not help much on improving my accompanying skill because I am stucked with my limited piano playing pattern - I think what I need is to be introduced to the new ways/pattern. I am thinking to discuss it with my trainer.
Timpani:
Last but not least; infact, this one is the most fun instrument to learn. Basically I am self-taught, because my professor just met with me one time, telling me the basic information about timpani - then I jump straight into the timpani playing. Every tuesday I have to play with the Chapel Orchestra with only one hour rehearsal time before the chapel starts. The most difficult thing in playing timpani is staying focus in counting the measures; because we only play it on certain measures... hehehe... I have missed counted a lot of measures so far, but I'm getting there.
The other difficult part is tuning the timpani. One timpani only can produce one tune/note at a time and we usually only have two to four timpanis, so that to play another note (for instance if we have a modulation), we need to tune the timpani. It is very tricky, sometimes I lost the beat when tuning the timpani...well well.. practice make perfect!
So that's my story of the instruments of my life... lalalala
